kat_nic: A cat wearing glasses (cat-fish)

The folks have all gone out of town to visit my one remaining grandmother. I have to work (and I already went by myself a few weeks ago) so I stayed home and oh god it was such a relief to come home to a quiet house.  It's just me and the cats.  Yep yep.  Will be able to get some reading done; normally I don't read at home, unless it's late and I can't sleep.  It's too hot to go out to the gazebo now, and too noisy most of the time in the house itself.  I read mostly at work, on my lunchbreak and on weekends.

So, anyway, I'm very much looking forward to a relaxing week (well, more or less, not counting when I have to go to work).

Oh, and lest I forget to share this bit of news that probably won't be of note to anyone but myself and possibly

[profile] madhowan: that Josh Groban Valentine's Day CD?  I decided to try and track it down, and you can buy it "used" on Amazon.com.  I say "used" because apparently a bunch of assholes bought them for the sole purpose of reselling them.  So I'll be breaking down and buying from Amazon for the first time ever--but not from Amazon itself, per se, since they're used.  Honestly, after I got over my initial disappointment of it selling out before I could buy one, I pretty much forgot about it until now.

First, the New Josh Groban DVD, Awake Live.  He does not disappoint. :)  I've watched the whole thing three times, and listened to the accompanying CD on the way to work over the weekend.  I especially loved his duet with Angelique Kidjo, "Pearls".  One word that kept coming to me as I listened to it was was powerful.  They both have such strong voices, and the lyrics were so emotional.  And I loved his performance of "Un Giorno Per Noi", my favorite non-English song on the album.  And I have to say, "Awake"--why is it only a b-side?  Please, please put it on the next album!  Better yet, make it the fist single on the next album!  As beautiful as it was live, I can't wait to hear a studio version.  Or, maybe he could release an lp.  I know it's not really done in the genre, but I know I also loved "Mi Morena" on his last live DVD, and I was half expecting to see it on Awake but it didn't make the final cut.  (edit--I found the studio version of "Awake" on the lovely interweb this morning.  I iz a happy fan :))

I love how he's evolved as an artist.  I remember his first album was almost strictly classical, and he didn't have any original songs.  And that first DVD, he wore a suit, was clean shaven, walked sedately across the stage as he sang.  He had to be induced by his producer, who accompanied on piano with a few songs,  to play for just a few minutes.  Now that he's proven he's star material, he's able to cut loose, put more of his personality in his music.  There's a reason I didn't really become as big a fan as I am now until the second album, Closer, when he was able to put two of his own songs on.  And on the last two DVDs, he plays piano (and has a drum solo! exciting) for a fair bit, besides just singing.  Not to mention, that if you saw a picture of him, you wouldn't put the picture with a classical artist (although he's as much pop artist as classical, now).  He's got that indie rocker, scruffy look going on.

Okay, second; AI, when the hell are you going to make me stop jumping through hoops just to be able to go to your school?  I have to go back there again at the end of the month.  And I have to stay the whole weekend!  Some kind of orientation.  The letter said it was for enrolled students, which threw me;  How can I be an enrolled student if I haven't even been told if accepted yet?  The next line reads that this weekend is supposed to complete the admissions process, and let me meet some of my future class mates.

Oh, and it gets better.  They also sent me an agenda, and it reads, Friday, May 30, 6 pm, check-in; 6:30 Welcome Dinner; 7:30 Music, Games, Open-Mic and Karaoke.

Open-Mic and Karaoke???

I completely and totally forgot the the new Josh Groban DVD was coming out!  (Yes!  I'm a Grobanite and I have no shame!)  Honestly, why can't I listen to 30 Seconds to Mars, Death Cab for Cutie, Incubus, and other totally awsome rock bands and Josh Groban?  No one seems to think that's allowed.  Anyway, I went and spent all my money (seriously, I have only about 3 dollars in my checking account) on Mom's Mother's Day gift.  Not that I wouldn't have still gotten her the gift, even if I did spend more than was advisable, but I would have agonized over it and said to myself, "but if I buy it for her, then I'll have to wait four whole days until I get paid again and can buy the DVD!"  And really, who would want to miss out on that?

Oh, and as far as I know, whatever stupid mishap/thing that happened with financial aide has been resolved.  So now I'm back to normal waiting-to-hear-back-from-these-people mode, as opposed to Oh-My-God-I have-to-download-this-form-and-call-this-person-and-fax-this-and-THE-DAMN-FAX-WON'T-GO-THROUGH mode.  I just want to go college.  Why is that so hard?

And while I'm in bitchy PMS mode, when I ask my sister what she wants me to cook for dinner, she replies Hamburger Helper.  WTF?  AGH!  She has an amateur chef, who is trying her hardest to turn professional, living in the house, and she wants me to cook HAMBURGER HELPER?  Otherwise known as "What Your Mother Makes When She Doesn't Feel Like Cooking Real Food", or, "What Your Father Makes When Your Mother Is Out Of Town".

Right now, I am listening to the new Death Cab for Cutie single, "I Will Possess Your Heart"! Yay! Can't wait for the new album. I actually wrote a paper on them for Music Appreciation, way back in freshman year. Yup, I love those guys. :)

OMG, now they're playing Mute Math! It's a good day. Yup. A real good day!

I heart XM radio.

I had another...interesting conversation about boyfriends/husbands the other day, and I came to the conclusion that if I ever did get married or move in with someone, it would likely be with a guy that I'm already friends with, rather than a love-at-first-sight thing. I just want to clarify, it's not that I'm adamant about staying single, just that I feel good about being single. We all know at least one person who is in a bad relationship, because they'd rather be with a jerk than be alone. I don't feel that way at all. Probably one day I'll wake up and suddenly see someone in a totally different light and that'll be it. But in the meantime, I simply don't feel the urge to date just because I'm supposed to be looking for Mr. Right.
